How to Play Blackjack

Blackjack - also known as 21 - is the world's most popular casino card game. The goal is to get a hand value as close to 21 as possible without going over, while also beating the dealer's hand. Number cards are worth their face value, face cards (Jack, Queen, King) are worth 10, and Aces are worth 11 or 1, whichever is more favorable. A "Blackjack" - an Ace plus a 10-value card - is the best possible hand.

How to Play

Place your bet using the chip buttons, then click Deal. You and the dealer each receive two cards. One of the dealer's cards is face-down (the "hole card"). You then choose your action:

After you stand, the dealer reveals their hole card and must hit until reaching 17 or higher. If the dealer busts, you win. Otherwise, the hand closer to 21 wins. Ties push (bet returned).

History & Origin

Blackjack's origins trace to 17th-century France, where the game "Vingt-et-Un" (Twenty-One) was played in casinos. It came to America in the 19th century. The name "Blackjack" originated from a promotional bonus offered by American casinos: a 10-to-1 payout for a hand containing the Ace of Spades and a black Jack. Though that bonus is long gone, the name stuck. In the 1960s, mathematician Edward Thorp published "Beat the Dealer," proving that card counting could give players an edge - revolutionizing the game forever.
