How to Play Connect Four
Connect Four is a classic two-player strategy game where the goal is simple: be the first to connect four of your colored discs in a row—horizontally, vertically, or diagonally. The game is played on a vertical board with seven columns and six rows. Players take turns dropping one disc at a time into any column. The disc falls to the lowest available position in that column due to gravity.
The game was first sold under the name "Connect Four" by Milton Bradley in 1974 and has since become one of the most beloved board games worldwide. Its rules are easy to learn, but mastering the strategy takes practice. Skilled players learn to block their opponent's winning moves while setting up their own winning combinations. Mathematically, Connect Four has been solved: with perfect play from both players, the first player can always force a win. In practice, however, most games remain competitive and exciting.
Strategy Tips
The center column is the most powerful position on the board because it offers the most opportunities for creating winning lines. Try to control the center early in the game. Always watch for your opponent's threats—if they have two in a row with an open end, block it. Look for "double threats," positions where you can create two ways to win on your next turn, making it impossible for your opponent to block both. Avoid playing directly under your opponent's disc when they can build upward; instead, force them to defend.
In two-player mode, you can challenge a friend on the same device. In vs AI mode, choose from three difficulty levels: Easy AI makes random valid moves, Medium AI blocks wins and occasionally sets up its own, and Hard AI uses advanced search to find strong moves.
