How to Play Mancala
Mancala is one of the oldest known board games in the world, with roots tracing back thousands of years across Africa and the Middle East. Archaeologists have found Mancala-style boards dating to ancient Egypt and beyond. The game spread along trade routes and evolved into many regional variants. The Kalah variant—which you're playing here—was popularized in the 20th century by American game designer William Julius Champion Jr. and has become a beloved strategy game for players of all ages.
The board consists of six pits on each side, plus one large store (mancala) per player. Each pit starts with four stones, for a total of 48 stones on the board. On your turn, you pick up all the stones from one of your pits and distribute them one by one into the next pits in a counter-clockwise direction. You always skip your opponent's store when sowing, so stones flow through your pits, your store, and the opponent's pits in a predictable pattern.
Two special rules make Mancala exciting: if your last stone lands in your own store, you get another turn. This can lead to powerful chains of moves. If your last stone lands in an empty pit on your side, you capture that stone plus all stones from the opposite pit and add them to your store. Plan your moves carefully to set up captures and earn extra turns. Skilled players think several moves ahead.
The game ends when one player has no stones left in their pits. The other player adds any remaining stones to their store. The player with the most stones in their store wins. A tie is possible if both stores end up with the same count. In competitive play, ties are rare but can occur when both players manage their stones equally well.
Strategy tips: prioritize moves that give you another turn, set up captures by leaving empty pits, and avoid leaving your pits vulnerable when the opponent can capture. Try to empty your rightmost pit last so your final stone lands in your store. Against the AI, start with Easy to learn the flow, then challenge Medium and Hard for a real test of your skills.
