How to Play Match Three

Match Three is a classic gem-matching puzzle where you swap adjacent gems to create rows or columns of three or more of the same color. When gems match, they disappear, gems above fall down, and new gems fill from the top. Chain reactions — when new matches form from falling gems — earn bonus points. The game offers two modes: Timed (60 seconds to score as high as possible) and Endless (play until you run out of moves or choose to stop).

How to Play

Click or tap a gem to select it. Then click an adjacent gem (up, down, left, or right) to swap them. The swap only happens if it creates at least one match of three or more. If no match is made, the gems swap back. Matched gems disappear, and gems above fall to fill the gaps. New gems drop from the top. If the falling gems create new matches, you get a chain reaction and bonus points. Each chain multiplies your score.

In Timed mode, you have 60 seconds to score as many points as possible. In Endless mode, there is no time limit — play at your own pace and try to beat your personal best.

History & Origin

Match-three games trace their roots to Shariki (1994), a Russian DOS game, and the genre exploded with Bejeweled (2001) by PopCap Games. Bejeweled became one of the first viral casual games, spawning countless clones and inspiring Candy Crush Saga, which has generated billions in revenue. The core mechanic — swap two adjacent items to make three in a row — is simple to learn but offers deep strategic play. Players must look ahead for chain reactions and plan swaps that set up cascading matches.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a chain reaction?

When matched gems disappear and new gems fall, sometimes the falling gems create new matches. Each consecutive match from a single swap is a chain. Chains score bonus points.

How many colors are there?

Six colors. This provides enough variety for interesting matches without making the board too chaotic.

Can I undo a swap?

No. Once you swap, the move is final. If the swap doesn't create a match, the gems swap back automatically.
