How to Play Snakes and Ladders
Snakes and Ladders is one of the world's most beloved board games, enjoyed by children and adults alike for generations. The game originated in ancient India, where it was known as Moksha Patam and was used to teach moral lessons about virtue and vice. British colonialists brought the game to England in the late 19th century, where it was adapted and renamed Snakes and Ladders. Today, it remains a timeless classic that requires no strategy—just luck and a good roll of the dice.
The board consists of a 10×10 grid numbered from 1 to 100 in a zigzag pattern. Players start at square 1 (typically the bottom-left) and race toward square 100 at the top. On each turn, you roll a single six-sided die and move your token forward by that many squares. The path winds back and forth: row one goes left to right (1–10), row two goes right to left (11–20), and so on, creating the classic zigzag layout that makes the board easy to follow.
Ladders are your friends. When you land exactly on the bottom of a ladder, you immediately climb to the top. A ladder might take you from square 4 to 14, or from 28 to 84—a huge leap forward! Snakes are the opposite. Land on a snake's head, and you slide down to its tail. A snake might send you from 99 down to 9, or from 62 to 19. These twists of fate keep every game exciting and unpredictable.
To win, you must land exactly on square 100. If you roll a number that would take you past 100, you stay where you are and wait for your next turn. For example, if you're on 98 and roll a 5, you remain on 98. This rule adds tension to the final stretch—a single unlucky roll can cost you the game.
Our online version supports 1 to 4 players. You can play solo against AI opponents, or mix human and AI players—for example, two friends plus two AI bots for a full table. The AI rolls automatically on its turn, and all token movements are animated so you can follow the action. We use crypto.getRandomValues() for cryptographically secure dice rolls, ensuring every outcome is fair and unpredictable. No sign-up, no download—just open the game and play. Whether you're introducing a child to board games or reliving childhood memories, Snakes and Ladders delivers simple, timeless fun. Perfect for family game night or a quick break at work.
