How to Play Spelling Bee

Spelling Bee is a word puzzle where you find as many words as possible using exactly seven letters arranged in a honeycomb. One letter sits in the center and must appear in every word you submit. The six outer letters surround it. Words must be at least four letters long and may only use letters from the honeycomb. Longer words score more points, and pangrams — words that use all seven letters — earn a bonus. Your goal is to reach the highest rank, from Beginner to Genius.

How to Play

When a puzzle loads, you see seven letters in a hexagonal honeycomb layout. The center letter (often highlighted in amber) is required in every valid word. Type your guesses using the keyboard or click the hexagons to build words. Press Enter to submit. Words must be at least four letters long and can only contain letters from the honeycomb. Each letter may be used more than once in a word. Use the Shuffle button to rearrange the outer letters if the layout feels awkward. Click New Puzzle to get a fresh set of letters with zero friction — no confirmation, no delay.

Scoring: 4-letter words earn 1 point, 5-letter words earn 2 points, 6-letter words earn 3 points, and words of 7 or more letters earn 5 points. Pangrams — words that use all seven letters at least once — earn an extra 7-point bonus. Your rank advances as your score increases: Beginner, Good Start, Moving Up, Good, Solid, Nice, Great, Amazing, and Genius.

History

The Spelling Bee puzzle format was popularized by The New York Times, which has run a daily Spelling Bee game since 2014. The concept draws on the long tradition of spelling bees — competitive events where contestants spell words aloud, often associated with American schools since the 19th century. The honeycomb layout and "one center letter" rule create a constrained but open-ended puzzle that rewards vocabulary, pattern recognition, and persistence. Unlike a traditional spelling bee, you are not given words to spell; you discover them yourself from the available letters.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a pangram?

A pangram is a word that uses all seven letters of the honeycomb at least once. For example, if the letters are R, A, C, E, I, L, N with R in the center, "CARLINE" (using C-A-R-L-I-N-E) would be a pangram. Pangrams earn a 7-point bonus on top of the normal word-length score.

Can I use the same letter more than once?

Yes. Words may repeat letters. For example, "BEE" would not count (only 3 letters), but "BEES" or "BEEF" would if those letters are in the honeycomb. The only rule is that you may only use the seven letters provided.

What rank is Genius?

Genius is the highest rank. The score needed varies by puzzle, since each puzzle has a different number of total points. Reaching Genius means you have found enough words to hit the top tier for that puzzle. A streak tracks how many puzzles in a row you have reached Genius.

Are the puzzles the same every day?

This version includes multiple pre-built puzzles. Each time you click New Puzzle, a random puzzle is selected using secure randomness. You can play as many different puzzles as you like in one session.
