How to Play Spider Solitaire
Spider Solitaire is one of the most popular solitaire variants, using two decks (104 cards) dealt across 10 columns. The goal is to build complete descending sequences from King to Ace within the same suit. When a full sequence is completed, it is removed from the tableau. Remove all 8 sequences to win.
How to Play
Cards in the tableau can be moved if they form a descending sequence. In 1-suit mode, any descending sequence can be moved together. In 2-suit and 4-suit modes, only same-suit sequences can be moved as a group โ you can still place any card on one rank higher, but only same-suit runs move together.
When you run out of moves, click "Deal Row" to deal one card to each of the 10 columns from the stock (all columns must be non-empty). A complete K-to-A same-suit sequence is automatically removed.
History
Spider Solitaire was included in Microsoft Windows starting with Windows ME in 2000 and quickly became one of the most played computer games. Its name likely comes from the eight legs of a spider, corresponding to the eight foundation sequences needed to win.
Strategy
- Build same-suit sequences. Mixed-suit stacking works but creates immovable blocks.
- Empty columns are powerful. Use them as temporary storage to rearrange cards.
- Delay dealing from stock. Each deal adds complexity. Maximize tableau moves first.
FAQ
Which mode is easiest?
1-suit mode (all Spades) is the easiest and most relaxing. 4-suit mode is extremely challenging, with a win rate under 10% even with good play.
