How to Play 2048

2048 is an addictive sliding tile puzzle that challenges you to combine numbered tiles on a 4ร—4 grid. The concept is beautifully simple: slide all tiles in one direction, and when two tiles with the same number collide, they merge into one tile with double the value. Your goal is to create a tile with the value 2048 โ€” but once you get there, the real fun is pushing past it to see how high you can score.

How to Play

Use the arrow keys (or WASD) on your keyboard to slide all tiles in that direction. On mobile, swipe in the direction you want the tiles to move. After each move, a new tile (2 or 4) appears in a random empty cell. When two tiles of the same value collide during a slide, they merge into one tile worth their combined value. The game ends when no more moves are possible โ€” the board is full and no adjacent tiles share a value.

Gamepad controllers are also supported: use the D-pad or left stick to slide tiles. The game tracks your score (sum of all merged tile values) and your best score for the session.

History & Origin

2048 was created by Italian web developer Gabriele Cirulli in March 2014 as a weekend project. Built in JavaScript and released as open source, the game went massively viral within days, attracting millions of players worldwide. It was inspired by earlier sliding-tile games including "1024" by Veewo Studio and "Threes!" by Sirvo. Despite its simplicity, 2048 sparked an entire genre of merge-based puzzle games and remains one of the most recognized browser games ever made.
