Asteroids is a classic arcade space shooter. You control a triangular ship floating in a field of asteroids. Your goal is to destroy all asteroids on screen to advance to the next wave while avoiding collisions. The game rewards precision, timing, and spatial awareness.
Large asteroids split into two medium asteroids when shot. Medium asteroids split into two small ones. Small asteroids are destroyed completely. Scoring: Large 20 points, Medium 50 points, Small 100 points. Destroy asteroids in quick succession to build a streak and maximize your score.
On mobile devices, use the on-screen buttons for rotation, thrust, and fire. The game adapts to touch screens for play anywhere.
Asteroids was released by Atari in 1979 and became one of the most successful arcade games of all time. Designed by Lyle Rains and Ed Logg, it featured vector graphics displayed on a black-and-white CRT monitor, creating a distinctive minimalist aesthetic.
The game's physics—ship inertia, wrap-around screen, and asteroid fragmentation—were innovative for the era. Players could drift through space, building momentum before firing, which added strategic depth. The increasing difficulty and hypnotic gameplay made it a quarter-eating staple in arcades worldwide.
Asteroids influenced countless space shooters and remains a touchstone of game design. This browser version captures the core experience while adding modern conveniences like touch controls and session statistics.
You start with 3 lives. Each collision with an asteroid costs one life. When all lives are gone, the game ends.
Yes. Each wave adds more asteroids and increases their speed. Later waves require faster reflexes and better planning.
Yes. On-screen touch buttons appear on smaller screens for rotation, thrust, and fire controls.
Destroying asteroids in quick succession builds a streak. Higher streaks can earn bonus points and track your hot runs.
