How to Play Pong

Pong is the quintessential arcade game that started it all. Two paddles face off across a black court, volleying a bouncing ball back and forth. Your goal is simple: don't let the ball get past your paddle. Each time your opponent fails to return the ball, you score a point. The first player to reach 7 points wins the game.

In single-player mode, you control the left paddle using W and S keys. The right paddle is controlled by the AI, with three difficulty levels to choose from. In 2-player mode, Player 1 uses W/S while Player 2 uses the Arrow Up and Arrow Down keys. The ball speeds up as rallies continue, adding tension and excitement to every volley.

History of Pong

Pong was created by Allan Alcorn at Atari in 1972, inspired by an electronic ping-pong game included in the Magnavox Odyssey. It became the first commercially successful video game, spawning the entire arcade industry. The original cabinet featured simple two-dimensional graphics and analog circuitry. Pong's success proved that video games could be a viable business, leading to the golden age of arcades and eventually the home console revolution.

Strategy Tips

Master the angles: hitting the ball with the edge of your paddle creates sharper angles that are harder to return. Aim for the corners when attacking. When defending, try to stay centered and react quickly— the ball accelerates during long rallies. Against the AI, vary your shot placement; predictable patterns are easily exploited on higher difficulties. In 2-player matches, psychological warfare matters—mix up your timing and placement to keep your opponent guessing.
